As a small female (5’2” and 114 lbs), I can’t stress enough the benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for self defense. The confidence and awareness you gain from BJJ can’t be found anywhere else. And don’t get me started on the health benefits! When friends and family comment on my muscle tone and ask me how often I go to the gym and work out, my response is…NEVER!

Always an athlete growing up, I first discovered Tae Kwon Do in high school and trained off and on as my schedule allowed through college. When I moved for my first job, my TKD instructor suggested that I try a BJJ school that was close to my new apartment. After my first class, I was hooked! Six months later I competed in my first tournament, and one year after that I discovered Lloyd Irvin Martial Arts. Recognizing the uniqueness of this program, I quickly transferred schools. Under Lloyd Irvin’s system and tutelage I improved so much that in just 6 short months I won THIRD PLACE at the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Championships!

ALL of Master Lloyd’s black belts have an incredible grasp of the technical and conceptual concepts of BJJ and are more than willing and capable to share this knowledge with their students. As a former professional swim coach, I appreciate that not all coaches/instructors are created equal in their ability to relay information in a detailed and easy to follow and comprehensive manner. Therefore, I consider myself lucky to have had the benefit of Brad Court’s excellent coaching in competition.
