Phil and Standley Win at Cage Time!

Sept 4, 2010

CageTimePhilVictorySmall

Paramount MMA fighters Phil Lopez and Standley Eugene made their official debuts this weekend at the Cage Time Mixed Martial Arts event in Plymouth, PA.

We had about 15 students and supporters in attendance to watch both Phil and Standley put on a display of MMA striking, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu technique on the way to impressive victories.

Phil faced off against a very tough kickboxer, who also had solid Jiu-Jitsu. But Phil controlled the action, scoring with strikes on the feet and getting the takedown whenever he wanted.

All three judges scored the bout 30-27 for a hard fought and emotional win. As the ref raised his hand Phil held up his Paramount t-shirt for the fans and pointed to all the supporters in attendance.

Standley used his wrestling to put his opponent on the canvas early in the bout and that was the end of the story. Despite his impressive Muay Thai, Standley chose to finish the fight with his Jiu-Jitsu, securing the armlock from the mount in the third round. His opponent tapped out and Standley jumped to his feet as the crowd roared.

Big thanks to all the students, friends, and family who came out to support these guys.

Special thanks to Ryan Zuver and Rob Duff for helping work the corners. Both Standley and Phil will be fighting again October 1st in Philadelphia on the "Hostile Intent" card.

Jonathan "JT" Torres Seminar

August 16, 2010

This weekend 20 year old Team Lloyd Irvin black belt phenom Jonathan "JT" Torres put on one of the most spectacular seminars ever held to a packed house at Paramount BJJ. JT is one of the Top Lightweight Jiu-Jitsu competitors in the World, in May of this year he submitted 4 opponents at the Brazilian Nationals including World Champion Lucas Lepri. He is a Silver medalist at the Black belt No Gi Pan Am and World Championships, and the European and Asian Open Champion. The list of JT's tournament accomplishments alone would take hours to list...

But what was most impressive was JT's ability to teach and explain his techniques in such a simple and efficient manner. Many of our beginner white belt students were looking like they'd been training for years after just a few hours of instruction and drilling- although of course it will take years to perfect the moves!

JT started off the seminar by showing his No Gi style of passing the guard and taking the back. After about 2 hours of intensive No Gi theory and technique, JT moved on to the Gi portion of the seminar. Here he detailed the variations using the kimono and how to shut down your opponent's offense and create openings and opportunities to pass and take the back.

It was apparent how much JT enjoys teaching Jiu-Jitsu, as he kept going non-stop for almost 4 hours! Then to top it all off, he trained live with some of the students, and performed just about every technique he had just taught! All of the students who attended were raving about the seminar afterwards, and will no doubt be utilizing the techniques and concepts they learned for years to come.

Thanks JT!!

This is a huge event, spanning four days with several thousand competitors each year. 2010 has been an amazing year so far for Team Lloyd Irvin, and this year we made history at the Mundial.
