Belt Promotions 2009
Tuesday, 24 February 2009 10:40

beltpromoclassThis past weekend Paramount BJJ held it's 2009 Adult Belt Promotions at our Downingtown, PA location. It's not often that one achieves rank in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In fact, BJJ is known as one of the most difficult martial arts to advance in. Each of the four students who were called up to "test" for the belt had quite a challenge on their hands.

You see, in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu advancement through the belt ranks is not based on memorizing techniques as with many other martial arts. Rather, BJJ belt promotions (and the art of BJJ itself) are based on the application of techniques. Not only does a student need to recall the moves, he or she needs to be able to utilize the techniques while facing resistance. This dates back to the birth of BJJ on the streets of Rio de Janeiro, where knowing how to truly defend oneself was imperative. It's also an important part of BJJ training that sets it apart from other martial arts.

As with past Belt Promotions each student impressed with not just their skill but their courage and determination, and all four were promoted to blue belt! So once again a big congratulations to our new Blue Belts:

Zach Farhenholtz
Glenn Wallace
Ryan O'Connell
Ryan Zuver

NJGC Results

One of the premiere events on the East Coast is the New Jersey Grappling Championships (NJGC). In addition to holding Gi and No Gi divisions for all levels, the NJGC also stages professional divisions for World Class competitors and offers Cash prizes. This past weekend Paramount BJJ sent 3 of our top competitors to compete in the amateur Gi and No Gi divisions. Check out the results:

Zach Farhenholtz: Gold, Intermediate No Gi
Ryan Zuver: Gold, White belt Gi; Bronze Intermediate No Gi
Kevin MacMullen: Gold, Blue belt Gi; Bronze Intermediate No Gi

In the Pro division, 19 year old Team Lloyd Irvin phenom JT Torres beat 3 super tough opponents to win the division and $1000 prize. JT has 6 (SIX!) Gold medals from International BJJ tournaments in the last 8 months alone, and just got back from the European Cup where he brought home 2 more. Stay tuned for video of JT's awesome performance this weekend, and in the meantime check out some of Paramount's finest in action...

BJJ United Tourney Results
unitedtourneyAnother great tournament put on by Jared and everyone at BJJ United, and another successful tournament showing for Paramount. We brought nine students this time and just like the past few tournaments we had great results. Here's the breakdown:

Ryan O'Connell lost his first match in White belt Featherweight by 2x2, 2x1 advantages. He stuck around and entered the Open weight division and won his first match before losing another close one on points.

Ryan Zuver beat 3 very tough opponents to win the White belt Lightweight, then beat his first 2 opponents in the Open before losing a strange match in the Semi-finals. Ryan escaped a very tight armlock mid-match, but some of the spectators thought Ryan had tapped. Ryan went on to win by points, but declared his opponent the winner since he too felt that he had tapped the leg during the escape.
